Bought by W.L. Moody six days after the 1900
storm (reportedly for “ten cents on the dollar”),
this imposing 28,000-square-foot limestone
and-brick mansion has 32 rooms filled with
opulent furnishings and heirlooms from one of
Texas’s most powerful families.
When W.L. Moody died in 1954, TIME magazine
proclaimed him one of the 10 wealthiest men in the
country. Moody’s philanthropist daughter, Mary
Moody Northen, made her social debut in the
mansion’s ballroom in 1911 and lived here (with
no air conditioning, but a year-round Christmas
tree) until it was damaged by hurricane Alicia in
1983. It was subsequently restored with 1900-
era furnishings. Notice the gold leaf ceiling in the
dining room and the beautiful stained-glass panel
in the entry hall of a family welcoming visitors
with the words “Welcome ever smiled.”
The home is a unique site for meetings, reunions, weddings, and special events.
Hurricane Ike Update Moody Mansion was flooded with five feet of water on the ground floor during Hurricane Ike.
Tours will resume Thanksgiving weekend 2008, and we are looking forward to welcoming guests to the house decorated for the Christmas holidays. As we recover from Hurricane Ike’s visit to Galveston, Moody Mansion will welcome visitors Friday, Saturday, and Sunday thru the end of February 2009. We plan to resume daily operations in March.
On a temporary basis we would ask that you call 409-762-7891 or 409-762-9931 for information or email k.guernsey@northenendowment.org or fax 409-762-7055 or write to us at Moody Mansion 2618 Broadway, Galveston, Texas 77550.

I don't know why they don't charge more. No matter how you feel about The Moody family legacy, you have to know that Texas wouldn't be the same without their dynamic family! |
