Galveston has a growing number of options for inexpensive casual and healthy dining. We were pleased that The Market Café reopened after a brief transition and were determined to give it a try. We had enjoyed the fare under previous owners and hoped the new incarnation would be of the same quality. We were not disappointed by this neighborhood eatery. If anything, the current version surpasses the prior venue.
We chose a sunny late afternoon in warmish spring weather for an early dinner (outside seating is available). The Market closes at 7pm (5pm on Sunday) so plan to go there for brunch, lunch or early dinner, or do take away. Ambience is simple and spare, with enjoyable background music that wasn’t too loud. They have adequate seating for small and large groups. It was not crowded when we arrived only a half hour before closing. Despite our tardiness we never felt rushed.
The menu offers numerous standards, plus daily specials. Feeling vegetarian, I chose the Stuffed Portobello Mushroom with a side of roasted asparagus and new potatoes. The Portobello was substantial and filling, with a delicious cheesy stuffing of mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, nicely herbed. The vegetables were well done and tasty. My companion decided on the Shrimp Cakes with remoulade sauce, and a side of grilled vegetables. The Shrimp Cakes were the star of the evening, with big chunks of fresh shrimp and just enough herbed breading. The remoulade sauce was light and tangy. Delicious grilled vegetables included yellow and zucchini squash, portobello mushroom, and red and yellow peppers. They were beautiful as well as delicious.
Talk about comfort food! You can’t beat this place. We have previously tried the meat loaf and felt like we were in Mom’s kitchen. If the ample portions do not deter you, the Café offers several simple, but yummy desserts. We tried a cheesecake brownie and a blondie. Either one would please those seeking something sweet after the main course.
Traffic is heavier at lunchtime, and they have a growing take-away trade. Give The Market a try. It’s located in the San Jacinto/Lost Bayou neighborhood with plenty of on-street parking.
