Galveston Island Arts & Entertainment

Galveston's visual and performing arts culture continues to thrive as visitors browse through art galleries during the day before heading out at night to catch their favorite musicals in the heart of Historic Galveston Island.

Postoffice Street Arts & Entertainment District is nestled in the famous Strand National Historic Landmark District, only three short blocks from The Strand. This district is home to over 20 quaint galleries that feature various types of art from local, national and internationally recognized artists. While some galleries highlight oil and watercolor paintings, along with other traditional style art, others introduce visitors to contemporary designs such as metal and glass sculptures, as well as paperborne art. Whichever type of artistic expression tickles the art enthusiast's fancy, this historic "Street" will leave an art aficionado fulfilled.

Every six weeks, the art galleries welcome Island visitors and Galvestonians alike into their galleries for ArtWalk; an event that provides visitors with wine and cheese while leading them through the historic streets and into boutiques and galleries.

The Grand 1894 Opera House is a year-round performing arts theater that has been restored to its original grandeur, earning it a spot among the nation's finest historical restorations. Designated as "the official Opera House of the State of Texas" by the 73rd legislature, early performers on the "grand" stage include: Lillian Russell, Sarah Bernhardt, the Marx Brothers and William Jennings Bryan. Recently, theater goers have enjoyed performances by Bill Cosby, Debbie Reynolds, Bernadette Peters, Gregory Hines, Willie Nelson and world-renowned Broadway musicals.

Galveston Island Musicals offers entertainment for the whole family. The classic Broadway style musicals, once performed outdoors, have moved indoors to the Moody Gardens Convention Center.

Island etc (east-end theater company) is the newest addition to Galveston's flourishing performing arts district. Island etc hopes to bring a refreshing new face to island theatrics by introducing innovative and cutting-edge productions by both new and established playwrights, while still featuring a few classics.

And, finally, The Strand Theater is located in the heart of the Strand National Historic Landmark District and sits directly across from the famous Historic Tremont House Hotel. This esteemed theater has been entertaining its visitors for nearly 30 years with productions that include: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Oliver and the hometown favorite, Galveston! The Musical.
